Wi-Fi & Internet · 2.4 GHz vs. 5 GHz

2.4 GHz vs. 5 GHz Wi-Fi

These are radio bands your router uses, a little like different radio stations. The numbers are not your purchased internet speed.

Neither band is always “better”
BandStrengthsThings to know
2.4 GHzGenerally reaches farther and travels through walls better. Common for printers, cameras, and smart-home devices.Usually slower and more crowded. Nearby networks and other equipment can cause interference.
5 GHzUsually allows higher speeds nearby. Useful for compatible phones, computers, and streaming devices.Generally has less reach through walls. A 2.4-only device cannot connect to it.
5 GHz Wi-Fi is not cellular “5G.” A phone company’s 5G describes a generation of mobile service. A 5G home-internet gateway can still provide both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi inside the house. Wi-Fi 5, 6, and 7 are also generation names, not the same thing as a 5 GHz band.

A modern router may use one name for multiple bands and let devices choose. That is normal. Some models also offer 6 GHz for compatible newer devices; it is not required for an older printer or camera.
