See clearly. Choose confidently.

Security cameras, without the confusion.

Start with what you want to see: the front door, driveway, side yard, or an indoor space. Then decide how the camera will get power and whether you want to pay for saved recordings.

U.S. guide checked November 1, 2026. Eight widely available do-it-yourself brands, plus ADT and SimpliSafe system options below. This is a practical selection, not a verified market-share ranking or every brand sold.

Live view is not saved video. A camera may let you look at the picture for free but charge to replay what happened yesterday. “Wireless” may describe the Wi-Fi connection, even when the camera still needs a power cord.

Which brand fits your needs?

Choose a brand to see its strengths, tradeoffs, and manufacturer links.

RingA starting point for: doorbells and outdoor cameras in the ring app

Example: Outdoor Cam Plus · battery or plug-in — About $99.99.

Features: 2K picture, battery and plug-in choices, and paid person/package/vehicle alerts on supported devices.

Before buying: Recording and playback usually need a paid plan. Choose the exact power option; solar panels and other accessories can add cost.

BlinkA starting point for: simple indoor/outdoor options and battery models elsewhere in the range

Example: Mini 4K+ · wired, newly announced — About $79.99 · pre-order.

Features: The new Mini 4K+ offers 4K video, two-way audio, and dual-band Wi-Fi 6. Blink also has battery cameras and a pan/tilt model.

Before buying: The Mini 4K+ is wired, not battery-powered. Local recording depends on the exact camera, compatible sync module, and storage accessories; do not assume it is included.

ArloA starting point for: battery outdoor cameras with paid smart alerts

Example: Essential 3rd Gen battery camera — From about $99.99.

Features: The example camera has 2K video, a rechargeable battery, two-way audio, and dual-band Wi-Fi. Higher-priced models add other features.

Before buying: Cloud recording and advanced alerts depend on a plan. Local storage requires a supported model and compatible hardware; it is not universal across Arlo cameras.

Google NestA starting point for: homes already using the google home app

Example: Nest Cam Indoor wired · 3rd gen — About $129.99.

Features: This indoor camera provides 2K video. Standard adds 30 days of event history; Advanced adds more history and continuous recording on eligible wired models.

Before buying: Included event previews are limited, not a substitute for a full recording plan. Continuous recording needs a supported powered camera and the correct subscription.

eufyA starting point for: customers prioritizing local storage

Example: Indoor Cam E220 · indoor pan/tilt — About $44.99.

Features: The E220 offers pan/tilt and two-way audio. eufy also sells outdoor, solar, doorbell, and HomeBase-based systems.

Before buying: Check each model: built-in storage, memory cards, HomeBase compatibility, and optional cloud support differ. “No subscription” does not mean every feature or accessory is free.

ReolinkA starting point for: local recording and wired multi-camera systems

Example: E1 Pro · indoor plug-in pan/tilt — About $69.99.

WyzeA starting point for: lower-cost cameras near a power outlet

Example: Wyze Cam v4 · plug-in — From about $44.98.

Features: The v4 offers 2.5K video, color night vision, and microSD recording. Paid plans add cloud event recording and other features.

Before buying: A memory card is separate. Outdoor use needs suitable power accessories and mounting. Check cloud clip retention and any AI add-on fees before choosing a plan.

TP-Link TapoA starting point for: budget local recording indoors or outdoors

Example: C120 · indoor/outdoor plug-in — About $39.99 sale; $44.99 regular.

Features: The C120 offers 2K video, night vision, and local microSD storage. It needs plug-in power.

Before buying: A memory card is separate. Confirm outdoor power protection and the selected cloud plan’s camera count. A weather-resistant camera does not make every outlet or adapter weatherproof.

Features that matter in everyday use

Plug-in, battery, or solar?

Plug-in: Less battery maintenance, but needs safe access to power.

Battery: Flexible placement, but someone must recharge or replace batteries. Activity and weather affect battery life.

Solar: Can help maintain a compatible camera’s battery with enough sunlight. It is not a guarantee of never charging.

PoE: One Ethernet cable supplies power and data through compatible equipment. Useful when you can run cable.

Cloud or local storage?

Cloud: Video is saved with the provider, usually for a recurring fee. Check how many days and cameras are included.

Local: Video is saved on a memory card, hub, or recorder at home. Some systems do this without a subscription.

Local storage still needs enough capacity and may be lost if the camera or recorder is stolen. Remote viewing and alerts may still depend on internet access.

Clips or continuous recording?

Event recording: Saves a clip when motion or another trigger is detected. It may miss activity before the trigger.

Continuous recording: Saves a timeline around the clock on compatible cameras and storage plans.

Do not assume a battery camera records continuously. Ask to see exactly what will be saved after any free trial ends.

A useful picture and useful alerts

2K and 4K describe picture detail. Placement, lighting, distance, and the viewing angle matter as much as the number.

Person or package alerts can reduce unwanted notifications, but may need a subscription. Two-way audio lets you speak through the camera.

For outdoor use, check weather rating, Wi-Fi at the mounting point, nighttime visibility, and whether the app’s text and controls are comfortable for you.

Compare the whole first year: Camera equipment + storage/hub + installation + 12 months of any plan. For example, a $100 camera with a $10/month plan costs about $220 in the first year before tax and accessories. That is an illustration, not a brand quote.

What about ADT or SimpliSafe?

A camera app usually means you receive the alert and decide what to do. Professional monitoring is a separate service; camera recording alone does not automatically mean someone will call emergency services.

SimpliSafe

Consider it if you want cameras as part of a broader alarm system.

Cost examples: Self-monitoring with camera recordings is listed at $9.99/month. Standard monitoring is $22.99/month but does not include camera recordings; Core is $32.99/month. Higher tiers cost more.

Hardware is extra. Confirm which plan includes the camera features and monitoring response you want.

SimpliSafe plans and pricing ↗

ADT

Consider it if you want an alarm-and-camera system with professional installation or monitoring options.

Pricing: Request an itemized quote for equipment, installation, monitoring, and the required service term. It is not a single fixed price for every home.

Check camera recording, internet backup, cancellation terms, and whether you own or finance the equipment.

ADT camera and system options ↗

Monitoring and response depend on equipment, plan, location, and provider terms. No camera or monitoring service guarantees that an incident will be prevented.

Can I use cameras with an iPhone or Android phone?

Many brands offer apps for both. That does not mean every camera works with Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, or every smart display. Ask Mark to check the exact integration you want.

You may need separate apps when mixing brands. Trying the app and learning to replay a clip can be more useful than buying based on specifications alone.

What should I check when buying secondhand?

Confirm the exact model, reset and account-removal process, remaining software support, battery condition, charger, and any required hub. Test live view and recording with your own setup.

No secondhand security cameras are listed here yet. Ask Mark about availability rather than assuming these guide examples are in stock.

How do I keep access private?

Use a unique password, enable two-step sign-in when available, and share access through the app’s invitation feature rather than sharing a password. Review who can view cameras and remove access that is no longer needed.

Place cameras thoughtfully, use privacy zones where supported, and discuss indoor recording with the people who share the space.

Let’s choose the right camera setup.

Tell Mark where you want coverage, whether an outlet is nearby, how strong the Wi-Fi is, and whether you prefer a monthly plan or local storage.
